The brief

Bonobos asked us to design the packaging for their album “Animalànima”: a digipak and a booklet for fourteen songs that deserved a physical presence of their own.

They needed an object that people would want to read, one that carried the band's personality over to the case, with humour and without falling back on conventional album design.

The solution

We approached the album as a medicine. The digipak adopts the graphic language of the pharmaceutical industry: a white background, a coloured band that identifies the product, a barcode and the net weight printed on the front, just like any box from the chemist's. “Animalànima” is presented as a 105 g vitanimal complex, with fourteen units.

The back is a complete patient information leaflet, written with a straight face. The songs appear as the product's ingredients, and the usual sections —what it is and what it is used for, storage, possible side effects— describe the effects of the album: it increases romance, energy and vitality, and may cause a sudden outbreak of critical thinking. The route of administration is, of course, through the ears.

We carried this same language through to the disc and the booklet, where the lyrics and credits sit alongside the cover's graphic system. The result is packaging you read with a smile, turning every song into a dose.
